The request of several top sportspersons, including boxer Nikhat Zareen, long jump athlete Murali Sreeshankar, table tennis player Manika Batra and shotgun shooter Bhavanish Mendirta, for financial assistance to train abroad was approved by the Sports Ministry in a meeting on Wednesday.
Boxers Nikhat, Preeti Pawar, Praveen Hooda and Lovlina Borgohain will travel to Turkey for a special practice camp with their coaches and physios. Wrestlers Sujeet (65kg), Deepak Punia (86kg) and Naveen (74kg) will go to Russia for practice ahead of the Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament in April. All assistance is being provided under the Ministry’s Target Olympic Podium Program (TOPS).
Shotgun shooter Mendiratta, who secured a Paris Olympics quota, will travel to Italy to train with personal coach Daniele Di Spigno for the ISSF World Cup in Baku, while Asian Games and Commonwealth Games medalist Sreeshankar will participate in the Diamond League in Suzhou and Doha. Meanwhile, three shooters Anantjit Singh Naruka and Raiza Dhillon (skeet) and Rajeshwari Kumari (trap) and para badminton player Palak Kohli have also been included in the core group of TOPS for this Olympic cycle.
