New Delhi. The peak demand (maximum supply met in a day) of power reached an all-time high of 223.23 GW on June 9. This information has been received from government statistics. These figures suggest that the impact of unseasonal rains on power consumption is now reducing. The power ministry had estimated that the power demand would easily touch 229 GW in April alone. Experts say that unseasonal rains hit demand and the use of cooling devices like air conditioners (ACs) was reduced due to drop in temperature during summer.
Taking a pre-emptive step, the Ministry of Power had asked all imported coal based power plants to operate at full capacity from March 16, 2023 to June 15, 2023, to meet the surge in power demand. Besides, the ministry had asked domestic coal-based thermal power stations to import coal for blending to avoid any shortage of dry fuel. According to government data, the peak power demand was 215.97 GW in April and 221.34 GW in May this year. The power deficit was only 170 MW in April and 23 MW in May. Experts said the shortfall is marginal, which could be due to technical reasons.
Power consumption declined in March while it remained stable in April. It declined again in May, which was due to unseasonal rains. Power consumption declined to 126.82 billion units (BU) in March this year from 128.47 BU in the same month a year ago. It was almost stable at 132.15 BU in April, 2023. It was 132.02 billion units in the same month last year. Electricity consumption has again come down to 134.20 billion units in May, 2023 from 135.15 billion units in May last year. Experts say that due to the rains, the growth of power consumption may remain sluggish in June.
