META to test VR Headset on 10-year-olds

New Delhi: Meta has lowered the minimum age limit for its Quest VR headset from 13 years to 10 years, amid ongoing debate on how tech platforms handle underage children and teens.
According to the company, starting later this year, parents will be able to create Meta Accounts for their 10-12 year olds for Meta Quest 2 and 3. These accounts will be managed by the parents.
The company said, “Children aged 10 to 12 will need their parents’ consent to create an account. These kids will have parental control over the apps they download from our App Store.”
The company said that when parents tell Meta the age of their children, they will be provided with age-appropriate experiences. “For example, we will only recommend age-appropriate apps.”
Meta said it will work with the developer community in the coming months to launch more age-appropriate apps so people in this age group can learn and engage. Parent-managed Meta Accounts will require a parent to create an account for their 10, 11, or 12-year-old.
The company said that without parental approval, children aged 10-12 years will not be able to open their account.
The company said, “All apps will have a product description page that provides information on what data is collected and how it may be used, whether the app has any social features. Also there will be an age rating provided by IARC, an independent global agency.
US and Canada is 13 years or older for Meta Horizon Worlds. In Europe this age limit is 18 years or more. Parent-managed Meta accounts won’t be available to preteens when they become available later this year.
The company said Meta Horizon profiles managed by parents will automatically be set to private, meaning people won’t be able to follow teens without their or their parents’ approval.
Meta said, “We do not display ads for this age group. Parents will also be able to choose whether or not their child’s data can be used to improve the experience. They can also delete their child’s account along with all the data associated with it.”
