san francisco (Best Hindu News): Meta has removed thousands of Facebook and several Instagram accounts linked to the Chinese propaganda campaign. In total, Meta removed 7,704 Facebook accounts, 954 Pages, 15 groups and 15 Instagram accounts, making it one of the largest networks of fake accounts the company has ever discovered.
According to the tech giant, the fake accounts tried to spread pro-China messages, including positive remarks about China and its province of Xinjiang, and criticism of the US, Western foreign policies and critics of the Chinese government, including journalists and researchers.
“We recently removed thousands of accounts and Pages that were part of the largest cross-platform covert influence operation in the world,” Meta said in a blogpost on Tuesday. These include Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, Pinterest, Medium, Blogspot, LiveJournal, VKontakte, Vimeo and dozens of smaller platforms and forums.
Meta also confirmed that it found evidence linking the fake account to a previously known pro-China influence operation that first emerged in 2019, called Spamoflaze.
Meta claimed that the people behind the fake account were not particularly skilled or successful in their efforts to go viral.
Meta said, “Spamouflage has continually struggled to reach beyond its echo chamber. Many of the comments we’ve seen on spamouflage posts come from other spamouflage accounts trying to pretend they’re more popular than they used to be.”
The company noted that the network targeted multiple regions globally, including Taiwan, the US, Australia, the UK, Japan and a global Chinese-speaking audience.
Meanwhile, Meta introduced additional transparency features on threads, including labeling state-controlled media and showing additional information about accounts so people can know.
