Microsoft joins OpenAI board as Sam Altman returns as CEO

San Francisco (Uttam Hindu News): Sam Altman has officially returned to OpenAI as CEO following a dramatic move earlier this month. This gives Microsoft a non-voting observer seat on the company’s board. OpenAI’s new board consists of Chairman Brett Taylor, Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo, the only survivors from the previous board. Microsoft is a major investor in OpenAI, with a 49 percent stake in the for-profit entity, which is controlled by a non-profit board, The Verge reports.
In a memo to employees, Altman said he bore no ill will toward OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, who was behind Altman’s removal. “Although Ilya will no longer serve on the board, we look forward to continuing our working relationship and are discussing how he can continue his work at OpenAI,” Altman said in the memo.
“The fact that we have not lost a single customer will motivate us to work even harder for you,” he told employees. He said OpenAI will advance the research plan and invest further in its full-stack security efforts. Altman said, “Our research roadmap is clear; This is a time to be wonderfully focused. I share the excitement that you all feel; We will turn this crisis into an opportunity! I will work with Mira (Murati) on this.
Taylor, chair of the OpenAI board, told employees he was thrilled to have “Sam, Mira, and OpenAI Chairman and Co-Founder Greg Brockman back together to lead and drive the company forward.” “We will build a qualified, diverse board of extraordinary individuals whose collective experience represents the breadth of OpenAI’s mission. “We are pleased that this board will include a non-voting observer for Microsoft.”
Altman was previously removed as CEO of OpenAI, developer of the AI chatbot ChatGPIT, and the board previously said it “no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.” Later, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella announced the appointment of Altman and Brockman to help the company pursue its advanced AI dreams with a new vertical.
