Mixed trend in edible oil-oilseeds prices

The effect of cheap imported oils continued in the Delhi oil-oilseed market on Saturday as well, due to which mustard, soybean oil, crude palm oil (CPO) and palmolein oil declined, while groundnut oil oilseed prices fell sharply amid normal demand. Slight improvement. Cottonseed oil prices remained at the previous level due to less arrival of cottonseed seed. Market sources said that there has been so much import of soft oils like sunflower and soybean that it has become difficult to consume oilseeds like cottonseed and mustard in the market.

The prices of imported sunflower and soyabean (soft oil) have crashed to such an extent that domestic oil mills in Maharashtra are incurring losses in crushing indigenous sunflower seeds and soybean as it costs more and the price generated is comparable to that of cheaper imported oils. Reason is getting hard to buy. The arrival of Cottonseed in the market has also decreased from 1.50 lakh bales earlier to 1.08 lakh bales. This will definitely create a shortage of khal and the price of khal may become more expensive.

Sources said that in the recent meeting of mustard oil organizations in Jaipur, it was said that complaints are being received of adulteration of rice bran oil in mustard to make it competitive against cheap imported oils. It was also said in the meeting that due to fixing of higher MRP, mustard oil is being sold to the customers at Rs 180-200 per liter while the domestic mustard oil costs around Rs 115 per litre.

Sources said that if the government has to increase oilseed production, provide cheap goods to consumers, control inflation, run the country’s oil mills, protect the interests of farmers, then it will have to return to the old way and Private mills will have to take advantage of exemptions like duty-free import, which after refining of sunflower and soyabean, will make edible oil accessible to poor people through Public Distribution System (PDS). Everyone can benefit from this system.

Apart from this, the import duty on the rest of the edible oils will have to be increased to the maximum extent immediately. Otherwise the water will go over the head and the situation will go out of control.
