Mixing biogas with natural gas will save foreign capital worth $1.17 billion: IBA

New Delhi. Foreign exchange worth $1.17 billion can be saved annually by blending five percent biogas in the natural gas supplied across the country. Indian Biogas Association (IBA) said this in a study. The government has recently decided to make blending of one per cent biogas mandatory in PNG from April 1, 2025 under the Compressed Biogas Blending Obligation (CBO) scheme.
It is proposed to increase the blending of biogas in pipelined natural gas (PNG) to five percent by the financial year 2028-29. According to the study report, this initiative is in line with the government’s broader move towards making India a gas-based economy. It aims to increase the share of gas in the energy mix from the current six percent to 15 percent by 2030. IBA says that $1.17 billion worth of LNG imports can be reduced by blending five percent of biogas with natural gas.
This can also reduce per capita carbon dioxide emissions by two percent. Along with this, organic waste will also be prevented from going into garbage bins, which can have many benefits. Biogas can be produced from various organic waste sources such as agricultural waste, urban solid waste and food waste. The government estimates that the CBO scheme will boost investments of about Rs 37,500 crore and help set up 750 compressed bio gas (CBG) projects by 2028-29.
According to IBA, the blending of biogas will improve India’s energy security as it is currently heavily dependent on imported natural gas to meet its energy needs. Mixing biogas with PNG and CBG can be helpful in reducing this dependence.
