New Delhi. The government has approved the continuation of the Central Sector Coal and Lignite Exploration Scheme with an estimated expenditure of Rs 2,980 crore. The extension was approved in a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) held on Wednesday. The time period of this extension is from FY 2021-22 to FY 2025-26, which is in line with the tenure of the 15th Finance Commission. It said, “The CCEA meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the continuation of the Central Sector Scheme for Exploration of Coal and Lignite with an estimated expenditure of Rs 2,980 crore from 2021-22 to 2025-26.”
Exploration for coal and lignite under this scheme is carried out in two broad phases: (i) exploration for promotion (regional) and (ii) detailed exploration in non-CIL blocks. Rs 1,650 crore will be spent on exploration for incentive (regional) and Rs 1,330 crore for detailed drilling in non-CIL fields, the statement said. It said that an area of about 1,300 sq km would be taken under the ambit of regional exploration and about 650 sq km would come under the purview of detailed exploration.
Exploration for coal and lignite is essential to quantify and estimate the coal resources available in the country. It helps in preparation of Detailed Project Report for commencement of coal mining. The geological reports generated through these explorations are used to auction new coal blocks, and the cost is then recovered from the successful allottees.
