Much remains to be done to reduce road accidents: Gadkari

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday that a lot more needs to be done to avoid road accidents that kill around 1.5 lakh people across the country every year. Gadkari, who is on a tour of Jammu and Kashmir to inspect various projects of his ministry, told reporters here that road safety is an important issue and a lot more needs to be done on it. Every year there are about five lakh road accidents in which about 1.5 lakh people die.
Gadkari said that India is sadly at the forefront of road accidents and several steps are being taken to improve the situation. But there is still a lot to be done. Along with this, he said that it is his dream to get petrol and diesel out of the country by adopting electric vehicles and running airboats in water. Gadkari clarified the position on the statement regarding his intention to retire from active politics and said that he has no such intention. He said, I am running many projects for farmers which are related to organic farming, bio fuel, handloom and handicrafts. My statement was unfortunately taken to mean that I plan to retire from politics.
