National Anthem History: The national anthem of India was sung for the first time on this day i.e. 27 December 1911 in the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress. ‘Jana Gana Mana’ is the first stanza of the Bengali hymn ‘Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhaata’ and was written by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore’s niece, Sarala Devi Chaudhurani, along with some school students, sang the song in front of a gathering of then Congress President Bishan Narayan Dhar and other leaders like Bhupendra Nath Bose and Ambika Charan Majumdar.

But there is an interesting history related to the national anthem, in which the national anthem was sung for the first time on this day i.e. 27th December, 1911 in the session of the Indian National Congress in Kolkata.
Who wrote the national anthem?
The country’s Nobel Prize winning national poet Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore wrote the national anthem. He composed this song in the year 1911 itself. He wrote the first national anthem in Bengali. Later Abid Ali adapted it into Hindi and Urdu. On 24 January 1950, the Constituent Assembly of independent India declared it as its national anthem. Actually the poem had 5 stanzas but its first stanza was taken as the national anthem. Rabindranath Tagore sang this song for the first time in 1919 at Besant Theosophical College in Andhra Pradesh. Then the college administration accepted the song for the morning prayers.
How did ‘Jana Gana Mana’ become the national anthem?
When the country became independent on 14 August 1947 and the Constituent Assembly met for the first time on the same night, it ended with ‘Jana Gana Mana’. In 1947, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) met in New York. When the Indian delegation was asked to sing the national anthem of the country, the UNGA was given the recording of ‘Jana Gana Mana’. In front of the representatives from all over the world, ‘Jana Gana Mana’ was played on the orchestra and everyone appreciated its tune. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru has mentioned this in a letter.
