Veteran film and television actress Uttara Baokar passed away at the age of 79 at a hospital in Pune on Tuesday after prolonged illness. An excellent performer, Baokar excelled in Mrinal Sen’s Ek Din Achanak as a professor’s wife who does not return home. She received the National Award for Best Supporting Actress for this film. She was also appreciated for her work in Govind Nihalani’s Tamas and Rukmavati Ki Haveli.
Baokar, who trained under Ibrahim Alkaji at NSD, was known for her powerhouse performances in plays like Umrao Jaan. She was also an All India Radio drama artist. The actress was running ill for the last one year. His last rites were performed on Wednesday morning, 12 April.
Uttara Baokar studied acting at the National School of Drama (NSD). She has played various roles in various plays such as Padmavati in Chief Minister, Mena in Gurjari, Desdemona in Shakespeare’s Othello, mother in playwright Girish Karnad’s Tughlaq.
In 1984, he won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, India’s national academy for acting. She also appeared in Marathi films such as Dogi (1995), Uttarayan (2005), Shevri (2006) and Restaurant (2006) alongside Sonali Kulkarni alongside Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Renuka Daftardar. She came into limelight after her role in Govind Nihalani’s film Tamas.
The veteran actress has appeared in popular TV shows like Udaan, Antaral, X Zone, Rishtey Kora Kagaz, Nazrana, Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, Kashmakash Zindagi Ki and Jab Love Hua.
