National Safe Motherhood Day 2023: Safe Motherhood Day is observed every year on 11 April to raise awareness about the importance of improving maternal and newborn health around the world. The day was first observed in 2003 following a summit on maternal and child health in South Asia, where participants agreed to designate 11 April as a day to advocate for safe motherhood.

Why was April 11 chosen

The date was chosen to commemorate the launch of the Safe Motherhood Initiative (SMI) by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1987. SMI aims to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality and illness worldwide by promoting safe and effective maternal and newborn care. On this day, various programmes, campaigns and activities are organized to raise awareness and take action to improve maternal and newborn health.

The World Health Organization (WHO) lists the ten key components of safe motherhood as follows:

prenatal care

This includes regular checkups during pregnancy to monitor the health of the mother and the growing fetus.

skilled attendance at delivery

It is necessary to be accompanied by a trained health professional such as a nurse.

emergency obstetric care

This includes access to medical care in case of complications during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period.

Family planning

This includes access to contraceptive methods and counseling to help women and their partners plan their families and prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Prevention and Management of Unsafe Abortion

This includes providing access to safe abortion services and counseling to prevent unsafe abortions.

Infection prevention and management

This includes preventing and treating infections that can affect the reproductive system, such as sexually transmitted infections.

nutrition

This includes promoting good nutrition during pregnancy and the postnatal period to ensure the health of the mother and newborn.

education and communication

This includes providing information and education about maternal and newborn health to women, families and communities.

empowerment of women

This includes promoting women’s rights and empowering women to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.
