According to the information received, rains are continuing in Himachal and Uttarakhand for the last 3 days. Over 80 people were killed in rain-related landslides and cloudburst-related incidents in both the states during this period. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert of heavy rain here in the next 24 hours. In Himachal Pradesh, continuous rains for the last 72 hours have created havoc. Four National Highways and 857 roads are closed in the state. On the other hand, the movement of all heavy vehicles including the track from Parwanoo to Solan on the Kalka Shimla Highway has been stopped from 7 pm on Tuesday night till further orders. Apart from this, 4285 power transformers and 889 water supply schemes are also lying closed. Maximum 323 roads and Shimla 234 roads are obstructed in Mandi district. In Mandi district, 2610 power transformers and 808 in Shimla have stalled. On Tuesday, the Kiratpur-Nerchowk forelane has suffered heavy damage near Panoh of Ghumarwin. The fourlane has caved in on one side. Whereas due to land subsidence, a crack has also come on the other side. Traffic is moving in one lane. Apart from this, landslides have taken place on the forelane. Harned ravine was also blocked by falling debris from the forelane. Forelane has suffered a heavy loss between Amar Singh Rohin of Ghumarwin. At the same time, Kiratpur-Nerchowk forelane was completely closed due to falling of big rocks from the hill near Alsou. Traffic has been diverted from Alsou towards Bharmana. A major landslide has occurred in the Vishnu temple area along with a new slaughter house in Krishna Nagar, Shimla. According to the initial information, four to five houses are reported to have collapsed. Let us tell you that amid the red alert for heavy rains on Monday, 58 people have been confirmed dead due to cloudbursts and landslides at various places in the state. About 26 people are missing due to being buried under the debris and flowing. 23 people have died in Mandi district, 16 in capital Shimla, 11 in Solan, 3-3 in Kangra-Hamirpur, 1-1 in Chamba, Kullu and Sirmaur. Twenty people are missing in Shimla, three in Mandi, two in Hamirpur and one in Sirmaur. On Tuesday, four more bodies were found at Summerhill in Shimla. Rescue operation underway. More than 200 trees have fallen at various places in Shimla city.

The situation of Uttarakhand is also unusual. Looking at nature’s fury in Himachal and Uttarakhand, it can be said that how helpless a man who has reached the moon is in front of nature.

The main reason for this disaster is the increasing pressure on the mountains and the construction being done in the name of development. The environment is being affected especially due to the cutting of mountains and trees for the construction of dams and roads. The increasing incidents of cloud bursts and frequent occurrence of heavy rains are only indications of the changes in the atmosphere.

To avoid nature’s fury, there is a need to make the model of development according to nature. There is an urgent need for the state and central governments to speed up the work of providing relief to the people and families trapped and affected by this calamity. Instead of accusing each other, this is the time to cooperate with each other and provide relief to the affected people. Giving relief should be the priority of the government. Non-governmental organizations should also cooperate shoulder to shoulder with the government in relief work.
