Around 10 tonnes of tomatoes imported from Nepal are on the way and will be sold in Uttar Pradesh during the weekend at a subsidized rate of Rs 70 per kg, a top official of cooperative body NCCF said on Friday. The National Cooperative Consumers Federation Limited (NCCF) is selling tomatoes at a subsidized rate on behalf of the central government from July 11 to increase domestic availability and control prices. Till date, NCCF has sold 9,38,862 kg of tomatoes in Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. NCCF Managing Director Anees Joseph Chandra told PTI, “This import is being done by traders. About 10 tonnes of tomatoes are in transit.
NCCF will sell imported tomatoes at a subsidized rate in Uttar Pradesh during this weekend.” Imported tomatoes will be sold in Uttar Pradesh at a subsidized rate of Rs 70 per kg. Imports will be regulated based on local availability and price fluctuations, he said. This is the first time that India is importing tomatoes due to high retail prices. Tomato prices have touched a high of Rs 242 per kg on Friday amid supply disruption due to heavy rains. NCCF has been selling tomatoes at subsidized rates in Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan for almost a month now. Initially it sold tomatoes at Rs 90 per kg and now it is selling tomatoes at Rs 70 per kg in these three states.
