This will help in providing real-time data to the farmers and create crop production forecasting models. As major agricultural producers, consumers and exporters, G-20 members have come together to take collective responsibility towards transitioning to a sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural food system.

India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant on Monday highlighted the need to increase crop productivity through new state-of-the-art technology. He said that this should be done to make the agriculture sector smart and adaptive to climate change. Kant was addressing the G20 India Agri-Tech Summit 2023 held here. He said, ‘India needs to move forward in the agriculture sector for higher economic growth. Its productivity should increase rapidly. This will mean that we will need many new cutting-edge technologies.” He said that digitization of agriculture, technological change and innovation in the agriculture sector has been a central priority in the Indian chairmanship of GCO this year.

“Making agriculture data-driven, smart and climate resilient is an integral part of the transformation of the agriculture sector,” said Kant. For this, open-access agricultural data platforms and marketing them as global public goods are needed, he said. The focus has to be on aspects like recognition. He also stressed on the need to involve startups and responsible investments from private and public sectors to promote the welfare of farmers, especially small and marginal farmers. Kant said that there is a need to ensure that farmers adopt these technologies.

He informed that this year the Working Group on Agriculture had four priorities – food security and nutrition; sustainable agriculture with a climate smart approach; inclusive agricultural value chains and food systems; and Digitization for Agricultural Transformation. He said that technological progress in agriculture is really important. This will help in providing real-time data to the farmers and create crop production forecasting models. As major agricultural producers, consumers and exporters, G-20 members have come together to take collective responsibility towards transitioning to a sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural food system. The event was attended by agri-industry, farmers associations and FPOs, representatives from seven G20 countries, agri-tech startups, international delegates and investors, the statement said.
