New Delhi. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday asked tax officials to use technology to make the Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration process more robust. Sitharaman gave this instruction to the tax officials in a review meeting held regarding fake registration of GST and generation of wrong bills.
In a tweet, the finance minister’s office said, “Nirmala Sitharaman directed that the GST registration process be further strengthened by use of technology to prevent entry of such shell firms into the GST ecosystem. The Finance Minister called for a nationwide campaign to explain the objectives of the special drive to weed out fake firms.
Under this special drive, tax officials have flagged 11,140 bogus GST registrations. Action has been started against the criminals under a two-month special drive. Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra and CBIC Chairman Vivek Johri also attended the review meeting.
