New York: Obese people are more likely to develop a benign blood condition that often precedes multiple myeloma (blood cancer of plasma cells), according to new research. Researchers found that weight, smoking habits and exercise can affect someone’s chance of developing multiple myeloma. A benign blood condition called monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is characterized by an abnormal protein produced by plasma cells, which is a known precursor to multiple myeloma.
Most people with MGUS do not have any significant symptoms and do not become immediately sick. The study published in the journal Blood Advances states that the presence of MGUS serves as a warning to monitor for the possible development of more serious conditions such as multiple myeloma that can turn into MGUS.
“While significant advances have been made in the therapeutics for multiple myeloma, it remains an incurable disease that is often diagnosed when patients have already experienced end-organ damage,” said David Lee, M.D., internal medicine resident at Massachusetts General Hospital. It is over.’ ‘Our research group is focused on investigating the risk factors and aetiology of MGUS to better understand what increases the risk of developing MGUS and its progression to multiple myeloma,’ he said.
