According to the report, the key factors affecting the viability of the tourism and hotel industry in Shimla, however, do not include the number of tourists staying at unregistered or unauthorized places.

The average stay of tourists in Shimla is now just one day as compared to four-five days in the 1970s. This information has been given in a report by Tourism Industry Stakeholders Association (TISHA). According to the report, the key factors affecting the viability of the tourism and hotel industry in Shimla, however, do not include the number of tourists staying at unregistered or unauthorized places. As per reports, this decline is due to traffic jams, parking problems, unrecognized stopping places in and around Shimla.

The average length of stay of tourists in registered hotels has declined by 70-80 per cent in the last five decades. Sushant Nag, a local hotelier, said, “Amid water shortage and landslides in summer on the Shimla-Parwanoo National Highway, difficult travel during rains, heavy traffic on slippery roads, tourists are being discouraged by the guidelines issued by the district administration.” We are discouraged to plan a visit to Shimla. Many times they cancel the booking because of these reasons.

TISHA president MK Seth said, “The association is making a plan to encourage tourists to come and stay here throughout the year. The Chief Minister will be apprised of the ground reality of the tourism industry and will be given suggestions to create a tourist-friendly environment and create new attractions in Shimla and its surrounding areas. “Tourist arrivals have increased many folds this time as compared to the seventies. Talking about the average, the proportion of tourist arrivals has increased, in the same proportion their stay has decreased. He said that in this figure, tourists staying in unauthorized hotels due to low prices have not been added.
