Rishabh Pant, who is all set to make a comeback to cricket 14 months after being badly injured in a road accident, is feeling as nervous as any debutant.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday declared Pant fit to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This wicketkeeper batsman will lead Delhi Capitals in the IPL, whose first match will be against Punjab Kings in Mohali on March 23.
Pant was injured in a road accident while going to his home in Roorkee in December 2022. The 26-year-old player then spent a long time in the hospital and the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
Pant said in a Delhi Capitals release, “I am excited but at the same time nervous. It feels like I am going to make my debut again.” He said, ”It is not a miracle to be able to play cricket again considering what I have gone through. I express my gratitude to our well-wishers and fans and especially to the staff of BCCI and National Cricket Academy. Their love and support continues to keep me strong.”
Regarding joining Delhi Capitals’ pre-season practice camp, Pant said, “I am excited to return to Delhi Capitals and the IPL. This is a tournament that I thoroughly enjoy playing. Our team owners and support staff have supported me completely from the beginning, for which I am deeply grateful to them.” He said, ”I am looking forward to playing in front of my family and the fans of Delhi Capitals again.” BCCI has declared Pant fit as a wicketkeeper batsman and there is every possibility that he will play both the roles. Pant has so far played 33 Tests, 30 ODIs and 66 T20 International matches for India.
