Amid the push for green economy, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) is pushing for exploration of Lithium, Nickel, Cobalt and other rare and important minerals. A senior official said on Sunday that a third of GSI’s annual projects would be to search for these elements. These minerals are important for clean energy technologies. GSI Deputy Director General (Policy Support Systems – Planning and Monitoring) Asit Saha said the National Survey Organization is now working with Geoscience Australia for mineral exploration. Apart from this, he is also talking about working with Russia and Brazil.
Saha told PTI, “We are running more than 100 exploration projects every year from 2020-21 for important minerals. This continues in 2023-24 also as this is our strong area. Earlier the number of such projects used to be 60-70 but now we have increased it considerably.” He said, “At least one-third of the important minerals account for about 350 mineral exploration projects in a year. The rest are for base metals, gold, diamond, limestone and bulk minerals etc.”
GSI has recently discovered Lithium in the Salal-Haimna area of Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, which has an estimated reserve potential of 5.9 million tonnes. He said, “Apart from Jammu and Kashmir, we have also submitted the G4 stage geological report to the governments of Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. He said that the exploration of Lithium is going on in Jammu and Kashmir, Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
