Here, the government had set a target of three lakh tonnes of ‘buffer stock’ of onions for the financial year 2023-24, which has now been increased by two lakh tonnes. NCCF Managing Director Anees Joseph told that initially we will start retail sale of onions (from buffer stock) in Delhi. We will sell it at a subsidized rate of Rs 25 per kg through mobile vans and two retail outlets. He said that around 10 mobile vans would be sent to the national capital Delhi on Monday and gradually more areas would be covered. NCCF will also sell onions through its two retail outlets located at Nehru Place and Okhla in the national capital.

In other four states it will start after two days

Anees Joseph said that NCCF has also planned to sell onions online through ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce) platform and is working on the modalities. The government has identified Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh and Assam for market intervention. In these five states, onions of ‘buffer stock’ are being used in both wholesale and retail markets. Joseph further said that buffer onion is being sold at the market rate in the wholesale markets, while it is being sold at a subsidized rate of Rs 25 per kg in the retail markets. Retail sales in Delhi will start from Monday, while in the other four states it will start two days later.

If you look at the official data, the retail price of onion across the country was increased by 19 percent year-on-year to Rs 29.73 per kg on Sunday. It was Rs 25 per kg on the same day in the last financial year. The retail price of onion in Delhi is Rs 37 per kg, which was Rs 28 per kg on the same day last year.

In view of the possibility of increasing onion prices, the central government has taken a big decision. The government on Saturday imposed 40 per cent duty on onion exports to curb price rise and improve supply in the domestic market. The Finance Ministry has issued a notification in this regard, stating that till December 31, 2023, 40 percent export duty has been imposed on onions. The export duty has been imposed amid reports that onion prices are expected to rise in September.
