Onion Price Hike: The price of onion in all the cities including the country’s capital Delhi is bringing tears to the eyes of the common people. It is being told that due to shortage of market goods, the price of onion in the capital Delhi reached Rs 65 to 80. Meanwhile, in Patna, the capital of Bihar, the price of onion has increased by Rs 10 per kg in two days. Here onion is available at Rs 60 per kg. The continuously increasing price of onion has also increased the tension of the government in the election year. In such a situation, many steps are being taken by the Central Government to control the prices of onion. On one hand, the government is selling cheaper onion from the buffer stock. At the same time, the export price is also being controlled. Mother Dairy, which operates about 400 ‘Safal’ retail stores in Delhi-NCR, is selling onions at Rs 67 per kg. Whereas e-commerce portal BigBasket is selling onion at the rate of Rs 67 per kg, while OTP is selling it at the rate of Rs 70 per kg. However, at the local level vegetable vendors are selling onions at the price of Rs 80 per kg.
Mother Dairy also increased its price
Mother Dairy was selling onions at the rate of Rs 54-56 per kg on Wednesday and now the rates have increased to Rs 67 per kg. To provide relief to consumers, the Central Government on Friday decided to sell onions kept in buffer stock at a concessional rate of Rs 25 per kg in retail markets. According to the Consumer Affairs Department, the all India average retail price of onion on Saturday was Rs 45 per kg but the maximum price was recorded at Rs 80 per kg. The average price of onion in Delhi is Rs 75 per kg. Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh had said that we are launching buffer onion in the market from mid-August. To stop the rise in prices and to provide relief to consumers, we are increasing its retail sales. According to the ministry, in the states where onion prices are increasing rapidly, onion is being unloaded from the buffer stock in both wholesale and retail markets. Since mid-August, about 1.7 lakh tonnes of onion has been sent from buffer stock to various places in 22 states. This onion is being sold in the retail markets at a concessional rate of Rs 25 per kg through the sales centers and vehicles of two cooperative bodies NCCF and NAFED. In Delhi also, buffer onion is being sold at the same concessional rate.
Crop affected due to delay in sowing
A senior official of the ministry said that due to delay in sowing of Kharif onion due to weather related reasons, the area of this crop has reduced and the arrival has been delayed. The arrival of fresh Kharif onions should have started by now but this has not happened. The official said that the supply situation is bad due to depletion of Rabi onions kept in stock and delay in arrival of Kharif onions. Due to this, onion prices are increasing in both wholesale and retail markets. He said the government has doubled the buffer onion stock for the current year and this will improve domestic availability and curb prices in the coming days. For the financial year 2023-24, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has kept a buffer onion stock of five lakh tonnes through ‘NCCF’ and ‘NAFED’ and plans to purchase additional two lakh tonnes of onion in the coming days.
Minimum export price of $800 per tonne fixed for onion till December
To increase the availability of onion in the domestic market and curb prices, the government on Saturday fixed the minimum export price (MEP) of $ 800 per tonne on the export of this major vegetable till December 31. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification that the MEP of onions sent abroad is fixed at $800 per tonne till December 31, 2023. The government has taken this step in view of the rising prices of onion. Due to short supply, onion prices have increased to Rs 65-80 per kg in the retail market of the national capital. Mother Dairy, which has around 400 successful retail stores in the Delhi-NCR region, is selling loose onion at the rate of Rs 67 per kg. Whereas on e-commerce portal BigBasket it is priced at Rs 67 per kg and on OTP it is priced at Rs 70 per kg. Local vendors are selling onions at the rate of Rs 80 per kg.
