Sources said that in view of the decision, the wholesale sale of onions remained closed in most of the APMCs of the district on Monday. It also includes India’s largest wholesale onion market Lasalgaon. Traders claim that the central government’s decision to impose 40 per cent duty on onion exports till 31 December 2023 will adversely affect onion producers and its exports.

Government imposes export duty till December 31

In the meeting held on Sunday of the Nashik District Onion Traders Association, it was decided to stop the wholesale sale of onions here for an indefinite period. Khandu Devre, president of the Nashik District Onion Traders Association, said on Monday that if onions come to the APMC, it is possible that those onions will be sold as it will take time for the decision to reach the farmers. After that this process will be closed indefinitely. This decision was taken in the meeting on the request of various organizations of farmers. According to sources, onions were brought to the APMC from many places and their sale has also started. The government on Saturday imposed 40 per cent export duty on onions to increase domestic availability amid fears of a price hike. This export duty will continue on onions till 31 December 2023.

Government will buy two lakh more tonnes of onions this year

The central government will buy two lakh tonnes of additional onion this year to make the ‘buffer stock’ of five lakh tonnes and use it in retail sale. The government made this announcement on Sunday. A day earlier, the government had announced a 40 percent tax on onion exports to facilitate local supply and control prices. The target for the ‘buffer stock’ of onions for the current financial year was set at three lakh tonnes, which has been achieved. Presently, this ‘buffer stock’ is being utilized in the target markets of select states to improve local supply and check price rise.

Government did five lakh buffer stock

According to official data, the nationwide retail price of onion was up 19 per cent year-on-year to Rs 29.73 per kg on Sunday. It was Rs 25 per kg on the same day in the last financial year. The retail price of onion in Delhi is Rs 37 per kg, which was Rs 28 per kg on the same day last year. Taking an unprecedented step, the government has increased the quantity of ‘buffer stock’ of onions to five lakh tonnes this year after achieving the initial procurement target of three lakh tonnes, the Consumer Affairs Ministry said in a statement.
