Paddy area up by 4.4%, pulses area down by 8.3% in current Kharif season: Govt

New Delhi: The area under paddy has increased by 4.4 per cent to 384.05 lakh hectares so far in the current kharif season, despite lagging behind in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The Ministry of Agriculture gave this information in the data released on Friday. However, the area under pulses declined by 8.30 per cent to 117.44 lakh hectare as on August 25, as against 128.07 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
The area under tur (arhar), urad and moong was also less. Sowing for the kharif (summer) season begins with the onset of the south-west monsoon in June, while harvesting begins in October. Paddy is the main kharif crop as more than 80 per cent of the total rice production is grown in this season.
Agriculture Commissioner PK Singh said, “We are very comfortable about the area under paddy cultivation. Sowing is still going on and time is left till 15th September. The area under paddy has increased to 384.05 lakh hectare till August 25 in the current kharif season, from 367.83 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
The maximum increase in paddy sowing has been recorded in Bihar from 29.8 lakh hectare to 34.88 lakh hectare, followed by Chhattisgarh (increased from 33.22 lakh hectare to 37.47 lakh hectare) and Telangana (increased from 17.36 lakh hectare to 20 lakh hectare). Registered in
In Andhra Pradesh, the area under paddy till August 25 was lower at 9.49 lakh hectare as against 10.69 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. Similarly, paddy sowing in Karnataka decreased to 5.77 lakh hectare this time as against 7.49 lakh hectare earlier. According to the ministry data, the sowing area of coarse cereals has increased marginally to 178.33 lakh hectare in the current kharif season so far, from 176.31 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
The area under oilseeds cultivation decreased slightly to 188.58 lakh hectare as compared to 190.38 lakh hectare earlier. Among cash crops, the area sown to sugarcane increased marginally to 56.06 lakh hectare in this kharif season on August 25, as against 55.59 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
The area under cotton and jute has also decreased respectively. 122.56 lakh hectare and 6.56 lakh hectare. However, the total area covered under all kharif crops was over 1,053.59 lakh hectare till August 25, as against 1,049.96 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
