While wheat and eggs have become costlier in Pakistan, an increase of 228.28% has been registered in the price of onions.
Huge increase in the price of gas, tea, cigarettes in Pakistan
According to the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), cigarettes became costlier by 165.88 per cent, wheat flour by 120.66 per cent, gas charges by 108.38 per cent and Lipton tea by 94.60 per cent in the first quarter. The price of diesel has increased by 102.84 percent, banana by 89.84 percent, petrol by 81.17 percent and eggs by 79.56 percent.
Four elderly people die while taking free flour in Pakistan’s Punjab province
At least four elderly people have died in Pakistan’s Punjab province in the past few days while trying to get free flour from government distribution centers. To deal with the skyrocketing inflation, the free flour scheme was started especially for the poor in the Punjab province. To take advantage of this, a crowd gathered at government distribution centers and many people died.
People of Pakistan standing in line for hours to get flour
A senior Punjab government official said four elderly people died and many fell unconscious in Multan, Muzaffargarh and Faisalabad cities in the past few days while trying to get free wheat flour. He said that these incidents took place due to the huge crowd of people and lack of facilities at the distribution centres. Two persons died due to stampede and two persons died due to exhaustion after standing in queue for hours, he said.
