India Per Capita Health Spend: Per capita health expenditure has increased in India. According to government statistics, there has been a significant increase in it in the last 15 years. Real per capita health spending in India in 2019-20 was the highest since 2004-05, according to estimates published on Tuesday by the National Health Accounts (NHA) of the Union health ministry. The share of the government in this is also increasing rapidly.

The government and household contribution to health expenditure was 41.4 per cent and 47.1 per cent in 2019-20. Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said that one of the important things is that the share of health expenditure incurred by the government has increased significantly. In per capita terms, in 2014-15, the government used to spend about Rs 1100 per person, which increased to Rs 2014 in 2019-20. In percentage terms, it was 1.13 per cent of GDP earlier and increased to 1.35 per cent of GDP in 2019-20. As per NHA estimates, India’s total health expenditure in 2019-20 was Rs 655800 crore. This is 9.96 per cent more than in 2018-19, which is the fastest year-on-year growth since 2013-14.

India’s per capita health expenditure was Rs 3,516 in 2019-20

The total health bill figures at current prices can be misleading, as the country’s total health bill may also increase due to increase in population. Per capita spending at constant prices is proportional to population as well as inflation. This shows that India’s per capita health expenditure in 2019-20 at 2011-12 prices was Rs 3,516. This is Rs 202 or 6.1 per cent more than in 2018-19 and is the highest expenditure by people on health in any year. Before 2019-20, India spent the highest amount of Rs 3,503 on health in 2016-17.
