PIBFactCheck: Writing something on clean notes becomes invalid? Know what is the real truth

PIBFactCheck/RBI Clean Note Policy News: Have you found any note with something written on it while shopping in the market? Many times when the shopkeepers give some written notes to the customers, the customers refuse to take them or the shopkeepers themselves refuse to take dirty or written notes. In such a situation, the question arises whether writing something on the notes makes them invalid? The answer is that bank currency notes do not become invalid by writing something, but doing so reduces their life. However, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) expects the citizens of the country to refrain from writing anything on currency notes, as doing so reduces their shelf life as well as spoilage. That’s why if you get a note written in Rs 200, Rs 500, Rs 2000, Rs 10, 20, 50 or Rs 100, then there is no need to be afraid of it.

What does PIB FactCheck say?

PIB Fact Check, a government organization that investigates the veracity of any matter, has responded to a fake claim being circulated on social media regarding the notes. In the message of social media, it was claimed that according to the new guidelines of RBI, if anything is written on the new notes, they become invalid. By doing this, the written note will not remain legal tender. Describing this claim on social media as fake, PIB Fact Check tweeted, ‘No, the written notes are not invalid and will remain legal tender.’

What does RBI say

From November 2001, the implementation of clean note policy was expedited by the RBI. The objective of the clean note policy of the Reserve Bank is to provide good quality currency notes and coins to the citizens, while soiled notes automatically go out of circulation. The Reserve Bank has also directed banks to issue only good quality clean notes to the public and avoid recycling soiled notes received by them at their counters.

Banks can exchange notes over the counter

Since 1999 when the RBI governor announced the clean note policy, several steps have been taken to increase the supply of currency notes and coins. The public was urged not to write on currency notes and banks were instructed to provide unrestricted facility for exchange of soiled and mutilated notes. As per RBI instructions, currency chest branches of banks should exchange good quality notes and coins to non-customers also for soiled and mutilated notes.
