Piyush Goyal to visit UK from July 10, to review progress of FTA talks

New Delhi. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is leaving for the UK on July 10 on a two-day visit to boost economic ties and review the progress of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks between the two countries. This information was given on Sunday in an official statement. The commerce ministry said the minister’s visit would focus on the ongoing FTA negotiations between India and the UK, besides discussing progress on the trade deal with ministers from European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states. The visit comes at a time when both India and the UK are committed to expanding their economic ties and increasing bilateral trade.

It added, “With FTA negotiations picking up pace, the visit aims to accelerate negotiations and pave the way for a comprehensive and mutually beneficial agreement that will spur economic growth and enhance relations between the two nations and Goyal will have high-level meetings with his British counterparts during his visit to the UK. These include representatives from various sectors and industries, apart from the Minister for International Trade. It added, “These meetings will provide an opportunity to discuss key priorities and objectives of the FTA negotiations.

It will focus on reducing trade barriers, promoting investment and expanding cooperation in areas such as technology, innovation and intellectual property rights. Apart from this, he will also hold a meeting with ministers and officials of EFTA member countries Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA). Negotiations on the trade agreement between India and Britain started on January 13, 2021. Till June this year, 10 rounds of talks have been completed between the two countries. Both countries want to complete this dialogue as soon as possible.
