PM Jan Dhan Yojana completes 9 years: more than 50 crore accounts have been opened; Total deposits cross two lakh crores

New Delhi (Best Hindu News): Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said that the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has brought a revolution in financial inclusion. Speaking on the completion of 9 years of the scheme, he said, 9 years of PMJDY-led interventions and digital transformation have revolutionized financial inclusion in India. It is heartening to note that more than 50 crore people have been brought into the banking system by opening Jan Dhan accounts.
Of these, about 55.5 per cent accounts are of women and 67 per cent accounts have been opened in rural and semi-urban areas. The Finance Minister said that apart from this, about 34 crore RuPay cards have been issued in these accounts without any charges, which also provides for accidental insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh.
Sitharaman said, with the collaborative efforts of stakeholders, banks, insurance companies and government officials, PMJDY has emerged as a significant initiative to change the landscape of financial inclusion in the country. The total deposit balance under PMJDY accounts is Rs 2,03,505 crore. PMJDY accounts have grown 3.4 times from 14.72 crore in March 2015 to 50.09 crore as on 16 August.
