Gita Press has remained the largest publisher of Hindu religious literature since its inception in 1923. It has updated itself with the changing times. Here 70 thousand copies of 1800 books in 16 languages are printed daily on German and Japanese hi-tech machines. It started in the year 1923 from a rented shop. Today this press is not just a printing press but has become a public sentiment. Hailing from Churu, Rajasthan, Jaydayal Goyandka belonged to a business family. Goydanka started the press on 29 April 1923 in a rented house for Rs 10 in Hindi Bazar, Gorakhpur. It was named Geeta Press. Gita Granth was printed in the press.
how did it start
Goyandka wanted to convey such Bhagavadgita to the people in which there was no mistake. For this he approached the Commercial Press of Calcutta in 1922. But many mistakes remained in it. When Goyandka spoke to the owner of the press about this, he became furious. He asked Goyandka to set up his own press. At the same time, Ghanshyamdas Jalan of Gorakhpur extended a helping hand for this. In this way Geeta Press was established in Gorakhpur. The printing machine was imported from Boston, USA. In 1926 it was shifted to a new place where it is till today. At that time this land was bought for Rs.10,000. Today the press is spread over a campus of 1.45 lakh square feet.

Mahatma Gandhi’s suggestion
Geeta Press works as a trust. Its goal is not to make profits. Religious books have to be made available to the people at low cost. The price of the first book printed in Gita Press was one rupee. In the year 1926, Geeta Press decided to bring out a monthly magazine named ‘Kalyan’. Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi also wrote his article in the magazine. Gandhiji had also given two suggestions to Gita Press in 1927. He said that no advertisement should be printed in the magazine and no book should be reviewed. Lalmani Tiwari, manager of Gita Press, says that the press has not violated Gandhiji’s suggestions for 90 years. Today Geeta Press has become synonymous with Gorakhpur.
Apart from Hindi and Sanskrit, Gita Press publishes books and literature related to Hinduism in 13 other languages. Apart from Geeta and Manas, more than 900 million copies of more than 2000 books have been printed. Only 12 crore copies of more than 100 types of Gita have been printed. Apart from this, 16.57 crore welfare magazines were printed. Although this press has seen ups and downs at times. Many times it came to the point of being closed. The Press was suffering losses due to providing pure and cheap religious books to the people.

They try to reduce their cost by purchasing raw material directly from industries. People come to see this press not only from the country but also from abroad. In the year 2021, when Ravikishan, MP from Gorakhpur went on a tour of Geeta Press, he tweeted that there are Japanese, Italian and German printing machines. The cost of these machines ranges from Rs 5 crore to Rs 15 crore. The press pays around Rs 80 lakh to the employees every month as salary.
