Privacy Policy: Government told SC, new data protection bill is ready, will be presented in monsoon session

New Delhi : In the matter of privacy policy of the people of India in the virtual world, on Tuesday, the Central Government told the Supreme Court that a new data protection bill has been prepared. This bill will be introduced in the House during the monsoon session of Parliament. Attorney General R Venkataramani told a constitution bench headed by Justice KM Joseph that the new data protection bill is ready. The bench also includes Justice Ajay Rastogi, Justice Aniruddha Bose, Justice Hrishikesh Roy, Justice CT Ravikumar.
The matter will be presented before the CJI
The Constitution Bench directed that the matter be placed before Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, so that a new bench could be constituted, as Justice KM Joseph is due to retire on June 16. After this, the matter was listed for hearing in the first week of August 2023.
Bill can be sent to some committees
Senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for the petitioners, said that the court should not link judicial proceedings with the legislative process. He said that the legislative process is complicated and this bill may be sent again to some committees.
Two students have filed the petition
The Supreme Court was hearing a petition filed by two students Karmanya Singh Sarin and Shreya Sethi. The petition challenges the contract entered into between WhatsApp and Facebook to provide access to phone calls, messages, pictures, videos and documents of its users. In this petition, it was said that this is a violation of his privacy and freedom of expression.
