The Department of Telecom has proposed to provide 5G network test platforms free of cost to government-recognized startups and MSMEs by January next year. This information was given in an official release issued on Monday. Accordingly, all 5G users including industry, educational institutions, service providers, research and development institutions, government units and equipment manufacturers can avail this facility at very low rates.
According to the release, the move will encourage the use of 5G test platform and accelerate the development of indigenous technologies or products towards the goal of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. Many startups and companies are already using the testing platform to test their products and services. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had introduced the indigenous 5G test platform on May 17, 2022. In March 2018, DoT had approved a Rs 224 crore multi-institutional collaborative project to set up an indigenous 5G test platform considering the country’s specific requirements and to accelerate 5G implementation.
There are eight institutions involved in this project. These include Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IISc Bangalore, Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER) and Center of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWIT).
