New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday said that around 88 per cent of the Rs 2,000 currency notes have been returned to the banks till July 31. A total of Rs 3.14 lakh crore worth of Rs 2,000 notes have been withdrawn from circulation till July 31. On May 19, the RBI had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes from circulation. Consumers have been given the facility to deposit or exchange these notes in banks till 30 September.
The Reserve Bank of India has decided to put 2000 rupee notes out of circulation. However, the notes continue to be in circulation. People were given time till September 30 to exchange these notes. Since the RBI had already reduced the circulation of Rs 2000 notes significantly before the announcement, ATMs were dispensing fewer notes than before. In such a situation, there was not much crowd outside the RBI decision banks.
