Mumbai / New Delhi, 08 June (Hindustan Times). Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das said that 50 per cent of Rs 2,000 notes, or Rs 1.8 lakh crore, have returned to the banking system. Shaktikanta Das said that according to the initial assessment, 85 percent of the Rs 2000 notes are coming in the form of deposits in bank accounts.
Addressing the press after the three-day bi-monthly review meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee on Thursday, the RBI governor said that so far Rs 2,000 notes worth about Rs 1.8 lakh crore have returned to the banking system. In value terms, this is almost half of the total Rs 3.62 lakh crore in circulation as on March 31, 2023. He said that around 85 per cent of Rs 2000 notes are being deposited in bank accounts, which is in line with our expectations. Das said the RBI is not thinking of withdrawing Rs 500 notes or re-introducing Rs 1,000 notes. RBI Governor has requested the public not to indulge in such speculations.
On May 19, the RBI had announced to recall the Rs 2,000 note. After this, from May 23, Rs 2000 notes are being exchanged with notes of other denominations in banks across the country or deposited in accounts. The Reserve Bank has said that till September 30, 2023, Rs 2000 notes can be changed.
