New Delhi. Leading retailer Reliance Retail has adopted a unique community-based HR approach while ‘joining’ employees for new executive-led roles at its stores. Reliance Retail internally calls it the ‘Karta Ceremony’ to encourage new executives to join the company’s fast-opening stores across the country. In this, the blindfold of the new employee is made to sit on a special chair and at that time his relatives, all the employees of the store and vendors are also present. After the karta ceremony, which lasts for several hours, the new employee is handed over the details and keys of that store. Different traditions are followed at this time depending on the geographic location of the store.

For example, if the store is located in Assam, the employee is greeted according to Assamese culture. Reliance Retail currently operates 17,225 stores across the country. Talking about the unique ceremony, the company’s Chief Human Resource Officer, GR Venkatesh told PTI, “Retail is one of the most human-intensive sectors in the world. We take pride in the fact that we are implementing our HR policy keeping in mind the aspirations of lakhs of our employees.” He added, “Karta is a special event and has its roots in Indian culture and ethos. .
