renewable energy: India is soon going to reach a big milestone in the direction of renewable energy. Union Power Minister RK Singh said that by 2030, the share of renewable energy in the total installed power generation capacity in the country will be 65 percent. The Minister of Power, New and Renewable Energy said that at present the installed capacity of green electricity in the country is 1,86,000 MW. He said that in 2015, we had planned to reach 40 percent share of renewable energy in total energy by 2030. We accomplished this target nine years ago in 2021 itself. By the year 2030, the share of renewable energy in the total installed power generation capacity will be 65 percent.

In an event organized on the occasion of the release of the book ‘Re-Imaging Clean Energy in a Carbon Constrained World’ by Sumant Sinha, Chairman of solar power company ReNew, Singh said that the pace of increase in renewable energy capacity is astonishing. Union Power Minister RK Singh said that we have planned to add 50,000 MW renewable energy capacity every year. At present, the installed capacity of power generation in the country is 4,23,000 MW. The minister said that the country would need 40,000 MW more power this year as the country’s power demand has grown at the rate of 14 per cent.

India is reducing the use of coal in its energy production. The country aims to have over 64 per cent non-fossil fuel based capacity by 2030. A senior government official gave this information on Wednesday. India has set a target of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030. However, coal-based generation ensures the stability of the operation of the electricity transmission grid. It is not true that we are not reducing coal, said Ghanshyam Prasad, chairman of the Central Electricity Authority, at the BCC&I Environment and Energy Conference here. We are in the business of energy transformation, but keeping in mind the energy security and supply of each consumer, we have to provide electricity to all types of consumers including commercial, domestic and industrial.

According to the latest data from the Central Electricity Authority, India has about 423 GW of electricity generation capacity, of which 206 GW is coal based and about 7 GW is lignite based. He emphasized that India is already at 45 per cent (non-fossil fuel based capacity) and reaching 50 per cent (renewable energy in the energy mix) is not a challenge. The country has set a target of over 64 per cent non-fossil fuel based capacity by 2030.
