London (Uttam Hindu News): The Competition Appeal Tribunal has rejected Apple’s request to halt a UK class action lawsuit accusing the tech giant of deliberately slowing down the performance of older iPhones to encourage customers to buy newer models.
Consumer rights campaigner Justin Gutman filed a lawsuit against Apple last year, The Verge reported, alleging that the company used such batteries in the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, SE, 7 and 7 Plus. which are not compatible with the device’s processor or operating system. Apple attempted to halt the lawsuit in May, calling the allegations “baseless.” The company also denied claims that there were problems with its batteries, except for some iPhone 6S models. The report quoted an Apple spokesperson as saying, “We have never done anything to intentionally shorten the life of an Apple product, or impair the user experience in order to promote customers. “
“Our goal has always been to create products that our customers love, and keeping iPhones lasting as long as possible is an important part of that,” the spokesperson said. Gutmann filed the lawsuit in the Competition Appeal Tribunal in London on behalf of 25 million UK iPhone users who used one of 10 different models of iPhone. According to the lawsuit, the iPhone maker “misled” iPhone users by releasing power management software updates that “secretly disrupted” the performance of the affected devices.
In 2020, Apple announced it would pay up to $500 million in the US market to settle multiple lawsuits accusing the company of slowing down some older iPhone models with software updates. In 2017, Apple acknowledged that it sometimes slowed down some iPhone models with older batteries to avoid unexpected shutdowns. Apple denied any wrongdoing, but agreed to the settlement.
