Income Tax Filing: There are many people who file their income tax returns themselves using the e-filing facility without waiting for the last date to file income tax returns. Among these, there are some people who often forget the password of their e-filing account. If you have also forgotten the password of your income tax e-filing account, then do not worry about it. You can reset your account password by following these easy steps-

There are two ways to reset the password

According to the Income Tax Department, the password in the e-filing account can be reset in two ways. First through e-filing OTP and second by using Aadhaar OTP.

Reset password with e-filing OTP

  • For this, you will have to click on the Forgot Password Reset option given on the home page of the e-filing portal www.incometax.gov.in.
  • The next page will open in front of you. Here you will have to write the user ID (your PAN number) and captcha and click on Continue.
  • After doing this, you will have to click on Using e-filing OTP in the drop down box on the next page and continue.
  • A new page will open in front of you again. Here you have to click on the registered email ID and mobile number option, which will display your email ID and mobile number. Now you have to click on Validate.
  • Now OTP will come on your mobile number and email ID. Enter both the OTPs here and then click on Validate. As soon as both OTPs are validated, the box for creating a new password will open in front of you. Now you have to write the new password and submit it. Your password will be updated.

Use Aadhaar OTP option

  • You will be able to use this facility only when your PAN and Aadhaar are linked. In this also, like the e-filing OTP option, click on reset in the login on the home page of e-filing.
  • On the next page, enter the User ID (your PAN number) and Captcha, click on Continue.
  • On the next page, select the option of Using Aadhaar OTP in the drop down box and click on Continue. A new page will open in front of you, where you will have to confirm your Aadhaar number. Enter Aadhaar number here and click on Generate Aadhaar OTP.
  • On clicking, OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.
  • Now enter Aadhaar OTP in the box and generate new password. Tick below and click on submit. Your password will be updated and you will also get its message.
