The Consumer Affairs Ministry has issued an advisory directing retailers not to insist on taking personal contact details or mobile numbers of customers for providing certain services. Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh gave this information on Tuesday. This advisory has been issued after receiving several complaints from consumers. He said customers have complained about several retailers not providing services to them if they refuse to share their contact numbers.
“Vendors say they cannot raise bills unless personal contact details are provided. It is an unfair and restrictive trade practice under the Consumer Protection Act and there is no logic behind collecting the information. There is also a privacy concern, he added. Therefore, an advisory has been issued to the retail industry and industry chambers Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and FICCI to resolve the issue in the interest of consumers.
It is not mandatory for customers in India to provide their mobile number to retailers for generating bills. However, retailers insisting on a single number to complete a transaction puts customers in an awkward position. Most of the time, customers are not given an opt-out option in many of these situations.
