Taking these notes already kept, some buyers are even coming to buy goods of very low price. A trader in Sarojini Nagar market said that Rs 2,000 notes were not even seen for the past several months, but after the announcement by the Reserve Bank, every other person is carrying this note.

Markets in the national capital witnessed a throng of buyers carrying Rs 2,000 notes even as UPI payments registered a decline. Traders said on Monday that these notes are being accepted for purchase even after the Reserve Bank’s announcement to withdraw the Rs 2,000 note from circulation. Taking these notes already kept, some buyers are even coming to buy goods of very low price. A trader in Sarojini Nagar market said that Rs 2,000 notes were not even seen for the last several months, but after the announcement by the Reserve Bank, every other person is carrying this note.

It seems that people want to spend the Rs 2,000 notes they have in some way. However, the Reserve Bank has said that these notes can be deposited or exchanged by going to the banks till 30 September. Ashok Randhawa, president of the Sarojini Nagar Mini Market Association, said, “People are buying goods worth Rs 100-200 from us and handing over Rs 2,000 notes.” We received complaints from traders yesterday that cash purchases have suddenly increased. Till a day ago everyone wanted to pay with UPI but now suddenly cash purchases are happening. Along with this, he said that traders have been asked to accept Rs 2,000 notes as much as possible.

Randhawa said, people are coming to the shop to get rid of the Rs 2,000 notes kept with them. So there is no point in asking them to pay through UPI. He, however, said that he was relieved by the clarification from the State Bank of India that there was no need to fill any kind of slip to exchange the Rs 2,000 note. KK Balli, president of Gandhinagar-based Wholesale Readymade Garments Dealers Association in Delhi, also said that the number of buyers coming to the market with Rs 2,000 notes has increased. “We are accepting Rs 2,000 notes but asking buyers to buy goods of at least Rs 1,000,” he said.
