Mumbai The rupee depreciated by 11 paise to close at 82.60 (provisional) against the dollar on Thursday at the interbank foreign exchange market. A stronger dollar in overseas markets and a weak trend in domestic equities weighed on investor sentiment. Marketmen said sustained outflows by foreign institutional investors also kept pressure on the rupee. The rupee opened at 82.57 against the US dollar at the interbank forex market. At the end of the day, it closed at 82.60 (provisional) per dollar, down by 11 paise compared to its previous close. The rupee touched a high of 82.54 and a low of 82.61 during the day.
In the previous trading session, the rupee had closed at 82.49 per dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, showing the US dollar’s position against a basket of six major currencies, was trading 0.25 per cent higher at 104.74. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures rose 0.53 per cent to $84.76 per barrel. On the domestic stock market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex closed at 58,909.35, down 501.73 points. According to stock market data, foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market and sold shares worth Rs 424.88 crore on a net basis on Wednesday.
