The leaders of the G-20 countries are brainstorming on giving a name to the Russia-Ukraine crisis. They are discussing how to address the Russia-Ukraine crisis in a joint declaration to be issued after a two-day meeting of G-20 finance ministers and central bank governors underway here . Sources said India is trying to build a consensus to include the word neutral. He said the officials discussed the joint declaration in the last two days and it appeared that the debate could be prolonged. India has neither directly condemned Russia nor taken its side. But, trade between the two countries has grown rapidly in the last one year. Russia has provided crude oil to India at reduced rates. US and French officials have blamed Moscow for the war.
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that ending the war with Russia is very important for the global economy. French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said the G-20 cannot go back on the joint statement at the last summit in Bali. Earlier in the joint declaration of the last G20 summit to be held in Bali, Indonesia in November 2022, most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine. It further said that although some member countries had different views on the situation and restrictions.
Significantly, Russia is also a part of the G-20 and it calls its invasion of Ukraine a special military operation. Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina skipped the G20 meeting in India. Russia is being represented in the meeting by other officials. China was represented by its Finance Minister Liu Kun via video conference. The French Finance Minister said that he agrees with Prime Minister Narendra Modi that this is not the time to go to war. Modi did not mention the Ukraine war in his inaugural session speech and only said that the global economy is facing many challenges at the moment.
