Scientists prepare model like ChatGPT to design new medicines

A team of scientists has developed a new ChatGPT-like generative artificial intelligence (AI) model that can design new drugs to treat diseases. ChatGPT gained fame in 2023 for writing emails, passing medical and administrative exams, as well as diagnosing patients’ illnesses.
Inspired by the popularity of ChatGPT and wondering whether this approach could also speed up the drug design process, scientists at the Schmid College of Science and Technology at Chapman University in California, USA, decided to create their own GenAI model. Called ‘DrugAI’, the platform allows users to input a target protein sequence (for example, a protein commonly involved in cancer progression). The model identifies 50–100 new molecules that can inhibit these particular proteins.
Dr. Hagop Atamian said, ‘This approach is allowing us to create a potential medicine that has never been imagined. It has been tested and verified. Now, we are seeing great results.’The researchers evaluated the molecules created with the help of DrugAI on a number of criteria, and found that DrugAI’s results were of the same quality as two other common methods, in some cases even better.
