Indian Railways: A parliamentary committee has urged the Ministry of Railways to sympathetically consider restoring the concession given to senior citizens during train travel and reintroduce the concession to senior citizens in sleeper class and 3A class. This has been said in the report of the Standing Committee of the Parliament on the Ministry of Railways headed by Bharatiya Janata Party MP Radha Mohan Singh.
Railway used to give discount: Let us tell you, this report was presented in both the Houses of the Parliament on Monday. According to the report, the committee noted that the Indian Railways used to give 40 per cent concession in fare to men who were 60 years or more and 50 per cent concession to women when the minimum age was 58 years. This discount was given for all classes in Mail/Express/Rajdhani/Shatabdi/Duronto group trains.
Exemption was withdrawn during the Corona era: The report said that the ministry launched the initiative “Senior Citizens Leave Concession” and gave an option to senior citizens who want to contribute to the national development to book their tickets without the discount. As per reports, the exemption option for senior citizens was withdrawn on 20 March 2020 to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Request for relief again: The report states that the committee finds that the Kovid restrictions have now ended and the Railways has achieved normal growth. The committee said that it urges the ministry to sympathetically consider and reintroduce the relaxation given to senior citizens in sleeper class and 3A class.
