In an ongoing case in Delhi High Court, Senior Counsel Anand Grover said that the price of SMA in China and Pakistan is less than 10 per cent as compared to India. Responding to TOI’s queries, a Roche India spokesperson said, “We want to have stable, broad and rapid access to Evrysdi.” We look forward to working together for tailored pricing solutions. We are working closely with local authorities to implement this as quickly as possible. We have done this in other countries of the world. We hope that this will help make the drug available to patients in India at an affordable cost.
who gets free medicine
The FSMA India Charitable Trust has filed this petition to provide medicines at an affordable cost to children suffering from SMA disease. This trust has been formed by the relatives of people suffering from SMA disease. In July, he had requested for an expedited hearing of the matter. The medicine for this disease in the country is very expensive and beyond the reach of the common man. The group of patients had approached the court for the first time in 2017 against the government. Subsequently, in September 2019, Cure SMA Foundation filed an intervention petition to expedite the hearing of the matter.
SMA Foundation has more than 1000 patients registered. Industry experts say that there are many cases in the country whose disease has not been detected. Only 300 patients can be given free medicine under the Humanitarian Access/Compassionate Use program. Only three drugs have been approved for the treatment of SMA in the world. The companies making them are Biogen, Novartis and Roche. Roche launched Evrysdi in India in 2021.
