san francisco (Uttam Hindu News): Google CEO Sundar Pichai has warned employees to be prepared for more job cuts this year. Google, which has fired more than a thousand employees across various departments in a week, is likely to cut more jobs, The Verge reports, citing an internal memo. We have ambitious goals and we will invest in our big priorities this year, Pichai told employees in the memo.
The reality is that we will have to make difficult choices to create the capacity for this investment, he said. In the memo, Pichai said the latest role eliminations are not on the scale of last year’s cuts, and will not affect every team. The Google CEO said, but I know that it is very difficult to see its impact on colleagues and teams. This year’s layoffs are about “removing layers to simplify execution and increase speed in certain areas.”
Pichai further wrote, many of these changes have already been announced. After laying off nearly 1,000 employees last week, Google is reportedly cutting “a few hundred” more jobs in its ad sales team as part of an ongoing restructuring exercise. Google Chief Business Officer Philip Schindler told employees in a memo that the latest cuts are the result of a change in the way Google operates its sales team, Business Insider reports.
A Google spokesperson also confirmed that a few hundred roles were being eliminated globally as part of the restructuring. In January last year, Google had cut its workforce by 12 thousand or about 6 percent of full-time employees.
