Supreme Court imposes fine on Mumbai Metro for cutting more trees than allowed, will have to pay 10 lakhs in two weeks

New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited to pay a fine of Rs 10 lakh within two weeks for felling more trees than permitted. A bench comprising Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice JB Pardiwala said that the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited’s (MMRCL) approach to the tree authority for felling of more than 84 trees was inappropriate.
Pay Rs 10 lakh in two weeks
The Supreme Court, however, allowed the Mumbai Metro to remove 177 trees from the Aarey forest, saying that a ban on felling of trees would stall the work on the project. The bench said that MMRCL should pay a fine of Rs 10 lakh to the Conservator of Forests within two weeks. The conservator should ensure that the prescribed afforestation is carried out.
IIT Bombay director’s team will investigate
The Supreme Court said that we direct the director of IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Bombay to depute a team to verify whether the given arrangement has been followed or not. Its report should be filed in the court within three weeks. Rishav Ranjan, a law student, wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of India requesting a stay on the felling of trees in the colony, on which the apex court took suo motu cognizance in 2019.

Let us tell you that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has just received the green signal on April 14 for the construction of Metro Line 2B. This line will be built between DN Nagar to Mandalay. A petition was filed by the Civil Aviation Authority regarding the height restriction. However, the Bombay High Court has dismissed the PIL.
In response to the PIL, the MMRDA came in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). In response to the PIL, it was stated that all the security measures of the flyer and the airport were taken and the NOC has been issued correctly.
