ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, two of the world’s largest steel producers, celebrated World Water Day enthusiastically on Wednesday with a host of events. Along with this, the company reiterates its commitment towards water conservation by reducing the use of precious natural resources, recycling and reusing.
AM/NS India has started several initiatives aimed at water conservation in Hazira. It has reduced water consumption by installing fin fan coolers in place of conventional cooling towers. The internal cascading of the cooling system allows AM/NS India to reuse 34.50 lakh cubic meters of water in the cooling system.
Similarly, the company has conserved around 20 lakh cubic meters of water in three years through its steel facility at Hazira and rain water harvesting system in the township. Under this project, a pipe network of over two km was laid with 12 pumps.
Mr. Santosh Mundhada, Executive Director – Hazira, AM/NS India said, At AM/NS India, we firmly believe that Jal hai toh jeevan hai (Water is essential for life). As a responsible and eco-sensitive organization, we always apply the principle of Reduce, Recycle and Reuse to conserve water. We have been successful in bringing down water consumption through various measures and techniques. Which is also making a big contribution in the efforts of water conservation.
AM/NS India has also implemented Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system at its Hazira Steel Plant. The wastewater generated in the plant is reused after treatment with Reverse Osmosis (RO) units. The 12,000 kiloliters per day RO plant project is in the commissioning stage and will be completed this month. This project will save 43.80 lakh cubic meters of fresh water per year. The total length of the effluent network is 30 km. In addition to RO, AM/NS India will use ultrafiltration technology at the plant to achieve its goal of zero liquid discharge.
AM/NS India, as part of its CSR initiative, is providing around 1,400 cubic meters of high quality drinking water per day to nearby villages. To celebrate the occasion enthusiastically and create awareness among the employees about the importance of water conservation, AM/NS India on Wednesday organized an online quiz on the eve of World Water Day.
An offline training session on latest new water conservation techniques and equipment in steel sector was organized on Thursday. This was followed by an online training session on water conservation measures by Saifi Najmi of Central Automation & Utility, Hazira.
