Gem and Jewelery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has achieved a significant milestone by facilitating India’s first jewelery export through courier mode from Mumbai. This development represents a significant leap forward in simplifying international trade.
India’s first 4 jewelery exports from CaratLane to USA via Air India were flagged off on 6 September 2023. The total export value was more than $1000. Vipul Shah, Chairman, GJEPC, said, “The rapid implementation of exports through courier mode within a year of its announcement underlines the government’s commitment to this important sector. I am proud of taking this historic step at a crucial time. I express my heartfelt gratitude to Mumbai Customs for this.” , considering the current challenges of the industry. Enabling exports through courier mode will not only open doors to new markets but will also significantly increase value added exports from the sector by directly reaching retailers and end consumers abroad.
Shah further said, “The use of courier mode for exports has the potential to reduce costs by up to 70% compared to cargo mode, thereby facilitating many jewelery businesses across India to enter the realm of e-commerce ” Mumbai, being a major export destination, will greatly benefit from this service due to its proximity to major gems and jewelery manufacturing areas, including Gujarat. This new initiative is in line with GJEPC’s mission to promote and facilitate international trade in the gems and jewelery sector.
GJEPC left no stone unturned to ensure that the process was seamless and efficient. This included working closely with Customs officials from the Courier Cell, dedicated stakeholders from the Adani Group and officials from the BVC. The steadfast support provided by the Chief Commissioner, Customs Commissioner and Joint and Additional Commissioner was truly commendable, and their contribution was vital in making this achievement possible.
This development is expected to further enhance the growth of the industry and open new avenues for exports, especially in the e-commerce sector. With the support of the Government and the dedication of its members, GJEPC looks forward to continued success in promoting Indian gems and jewelery on the global platform.
