A Pre-Vibrant Seminar on Gems and Jewelery Sector on the topic ‘Jewellery, Gems and Gujarat: Renaissance for Bright India’ at Platinum Hall, Sarsana on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, as part of the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024 was conducted. In which a session was organized at 1:30 pm on the topic ‘Redefining G&J: A Vision for Gujarat’s Tech Powered Transformation’.

In this session, Ramesh Vaghasia, President of South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Jayanti Savalia, President of Surat Jewelery Manufacturers Association, Shreyansh Dholakia, Director of Shri Ramakrishna Exports Pvt Ltd, Kalpesh Desai, Founder and CEO of International School of Gems and Jewellery, Gems and Jewelery Industry leaders like Adil Kotwal, Chairman, Skill Council of India and Sameer Joshi, Director, Indian Diamond Institute etc. participated and guided the entrepreneurs. The session was moderated by Praveen Nahar, Director, National Institute of Design.

Chamber President Ramesh Vaghasia said that whatever technology comes in the industry, industrialists adopt it, but when all these technologies are imported from abroad, then an eco system should be created to develop the necessary technology in the industry. 30 percent of the technology which is imported from abroad, developers are of Indian origin, hence a research and development center or eco system should be created in Gujarat including Surat in which it can be promoted by investing capital and resources should be made available for it. . , Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also accept this.

Jayanti Savalia said that 3D technology now plays an important role in handmade jewellery. Now different designs are created in jewelery using Sketch Book Pro Create technology. Jewelery manufacturers are moving forward keeping environmental protection in mind.

Shreyansh Dholakia said that while ethical sourcing depends on data, the data can be used through blockchain. While technology is being developed to know from which part of the land (mine) the diamonds have come, a machine can be made and installed in the Skill University.

Kalpesh Desai said that technology changes in the jewelery industry every three to five years. Digitalization is also happening in this industry. Now Sketch Book Pro Create technology has arrived, which takes ten to fifteen minutes and the jewelery is designed accordingly. At present the industry is focusing on 3D design.

Adil Kotwal said, jewelery is mostly designed and made in Thailand, Italy, France and Switzerland. Due to which the value addition of jewelery in India is on a very small scale i.e. 3 percent, hence there is a need for skill development in the jewelery industry. The jewelery needs to be designed in Surat and the jewelery needs to be exported from India. There is a need to set up a skill center and train artisans to make jewellery. India should be made the jewelery center of the world.

Sameer Joshi said, Surat will have to enter jewelery manufacturing for value addition. As the whole world is now focusing on recycling, Surat should also move beyond yellow gold to producing different varieties in purple and black gold jewellery. For this the industry will have to focus on technology.
